Turning Point is a private,
non-profit corporation whose purposes shall be determined by the Board of
Directors and Staff and shall be reflected in its Articles of Incorporation
and By-laws.
Providing comprehensive quality services to victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault shall be the primary purpose of Turning Point.
In the provision of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual
assault, Turning Point recognizes domestic violence and sexual assault as
social issues—not the result of individual pathology
Turning Point further acknowledges that victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault have many alternatives available to them and that it is the
right of each individual to choose among these alternatives.
Therefore, it shall be the purpose of this agency to assist victims of
domestic violence and sexual assault in exploring available alternatives and
to enable and empower them to make healthy decisions regarding their
futures.

Turning Point works
collaboratively with the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the
Alabama Coalition Against Rape in an effort to reach out to all victims of
domestic violence and sexual assault in the state of Alabama. As a result of
this collaboration, Turning Point has agreed to provide domestic violence
services to six counties in West Alabama and sexual assault services to nine
counties in West Alabama.

Turning Point, formerly known
as Spouse Abuse Network, was incorporated in 1979. It began as one room
reserved in Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa where one family at a time
could escape from an abusive home. Since then, Turning Point has grown to
serve several thousand clients each year providing them with the following
services: emergency shelter, clothing, food, and transportation, 24 hour
crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, case management, child
advocacy, court advocacy, information and referrals, and community
education/prevention and outreach. In 1992, Turning Point began serving
victims of sexual assault in these capacities.

During the 2005 year, Turning
Point received funding from the following sources:
United Way, Alabama Department of Economic and Community
Affairs (Law Enforcement Traffic and Safety Division) Violence Against Women
Act, Alabama Coalition
Against Domestic Violence, Alabama Coalition Against Rape, Alabama
Department of Public Health, Department of Human Resources, Emergency
Shelter Grant Program, Office of Prosecution Services, Phillip Morris Doors
of Hope, Federal Emergency Management Agency, USDA Child Nutrition Program,
Ron Turner Construction, District Attorney Fund of Fayette, Tuscaloosa
County Commission Violence Against Women Act, Children's Trust Fund,
Corporate Foundation for Children, and other local community agencies and
organizations.
Turning Point continues to rely on community support through individual and
group contributions as well as in-kind donations.
